Craig Wright Accused Of ”Industrial Scale” Forgery And ”Brazen Lies” In First Day Of UK Trial

Craig Wright, an Australian computer expert who claims he is Bitcoin inventor Satoshi Nakamoto, was accused of ”industrial scale” forgery and “brazen lies” in a UK high court on Feb. 5

The Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a non-profit organization backed by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey and high-profile crypto players such as Coinbase and MicroStrategy, is suing Wright, arguing that he spun an ”elaborate false narrative,” forged documents and ”terrorised” those who challenged him.

Wright, who denies the allegations, attended the start of the trial, which is expected to last five weeks. He claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonym of the person widely credited with founding the king of cryptocurrencies.

Craig Wright Brought Multiple Lawsuits Against Crypto Developers

Wright has launched multiple legal attacks against members of the crypto community that builds on the open-source Bitcoin project, alleging that these developers are violating copyrights.

“We’re seeking an injunction that’s going to preclude Dr. Wright from doing this ever again,” a COPA spokesperson told CoinDesk after the hearing.

Defense Gives Arguments For Why Craig Wright Could Be Satoshi

The defense argued that Wright’s educational and professional background made him someone capable of inventing something like Bitcoin.

“COPA has been unable to point to any direct evidence that Dr. Wright is not Satoshi,” Wright’s counsel, Lord Anthony Grabiner, said in the court session. He also claimed that no one else has come forward who claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto.

“Even if Satoshi prefers to remain in the shadows, he could have declared himself to the court anonymously, which hasn’t happened,” Grabiner said.

The COPA spokesperson said the nonprofit has no intention of identifying the real Satoshi, but is instead concerned with proving once and for all that the Australian computer scientist is not Bitcoin’s creator.

Presiding Judge James Mellor allowed Wright’s counsel to admit new evidence, which will be subject to expert review and cross-examination by COPA.
