Do fast blockchains have to sacrifice security? The blockchain trilemma

Image
While tradeoffs are unavoidable, experts interviewed by crypto.news believe that the blockchain trilemma sheds light on the challenges developers face and ways to navigate them. The blockchain trilemma, coined by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in 2017, highlights the challenges developers face in creating distributed ledger systems. According to Buterin, architects must make tradeoffs and prioritize two out of three key features. In an interview with crypto.news, Luke Nolan, a research associate at CoinShares, concurred with this viewpoint. Nolan believes that, in a broad sense, the blockchain trilemma effectively illustrates the challenge of achieving all three features to their fullest extent. He emphasized that developers often sacrifice some aspects or both when optimizing one feature. The blockchain trilemma Alex Dulub, Founder of Web3 Antivirus, suggests that speeding up a blockchain can sometimes compromise its safety. He believes that solutions like Layer-2 (L2) netwo...

As of the latest update in January, the media outlet’s list comprises 911 blockchain-based games, with 334 actively live and 577 in various stages of development. The primary reasons cited for the cancellation of blockchain -based games were mainly tied to funding challenges and evolving market conditions. However, a majority of the discontinued projects were also characterized as smaller initiatives led by less experienced and under-capitalized teams. Moreover, in most instances, developers chose not to make any formal announcements at all and simply ceased operations without prior notice, the report notes. Abandoned block...

Circle launches cross-chain USDC transfer protocol for Ethereum, Avalanche

The new protocol burns coins on the sending chain, and mints new ones on the receiving chain. Circle, the creator of US Dollar Coin (USDC), has launched a mainnet protocol that lets users transfer USDC between Ethereum and Avalanche, according to an April 26 announcement. Previously, Avalanche users who held USDC on Ethereum had to deposit their coins with a Circle partner or use a third-party bridge to transfer their USDC from one network to the other. The new Cross-Chain Transfer Protocol (CCTP) protocol appears to do away with this need for USDC bridges. The team released a video on April 13 showing how the new protocol works. Unlike a traditional bridge, it doesn’t lock tokens sent to its contract. Instead, it completely destroys them and issues new tokens on the receiving network. Users can redeem these new tokens for bank deposits directly, by depositing the tokens with Circle or its partners. In the announcement, the team said that it expects CCTP to solve the problem of “f...
